Jump to Recipe

This Cabbage Rolls recipe brings me back a lot of memories! My recipe collection is incomplete without this childhood favorite and my rendition of one of my Mother’s recipes. Easy, tasty, healthy, and quick.. Steamed Cabbage Rolls.
Sometimes, I wonder if my Mummy loved making these rolls more than feeding them to us!

This easy-to-make snack is popular across Europe, Asia, and Africa and every country has its own variation to it. Some use meat, some use rice but we are today going to make it with paneer! You can also make it with soya chicken or any other fillings that you like.

This is what you need:

  • 8 to 10 whole cabbage leaves
  • 200 gm of minced paneer/ soya/ chicken
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 to 3 tbsp of oil
  • 1 tbsp of ginger
  • 1 tbsp of garlic
  • Salt, Black Pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp of roasted peanuts
  • 1 tbsp of Dark Soy Sauce
  • 1 tbsp of Schezwan Sauce

How to make it:

  • First step is to separate the cabbage leaves and wash them well.
  • Next, you need to take a large pan and boil some water with salt. In this water, you need to immerse these leaves for 1 to 1½ minutes until softened. This step is important as it makes it easier to help roll the cabbages.
  • Once they are boiled, take them out and let them drip for a while.
  • In the meanwhile, you can make the filling for which you need to heat some oil in a saucepan and add some onions.
  • Now add in the ginger, garlic, and green chilies.
  • Once everything has cooked, add in the soya sauce, schezwan sauce along with the seasonings.
  • Finally, add in the paneer/soya/chicken and mix well. Cover and let it cook till done.
  • Now that our leaves are softened and filling is ready, it’s time to assemble them. For which you just need to lay the leaves down on a surface, fill in the fillings, and roll them.
  • Lastly, you need to steam them for 8 to 10 minutes. You can use any steamer that is available with you.
  • Your cabbage rolls are ready! You can garnish them with some soy sauce, schezwan sauce, coriander leaves, and roasted peanuts.
  • Serve piping hot!
