Homemade Pizza Sauce

Jump to Recipe

In this post, I am going to share my recipe for Pizza sauce from scratch. Yes, that’s right, you can make it at home! Even though thousands are options are available in-store but there is nothing that can compete with the taste of a pizza or pasta made with this homemade sauce.

We shall be using the reddest available tomatoes of course but remember that however red your tomatoes may be, the resulting sauce in the end is slightly orangish-yellow.

But there is a way to get a decently red pizza sauce at home. What I do is add a small quantity of packed tomato puree to my homemade sauce. This way, I get a red sauce without compromising on quality. I am not the greatest fan of preservatives and color-laden purees and pastes.

Note: There is a way to a faster homemade sauce as well. I will give you both versions here. However, the fastest homemade pizza sauce would use a canned tomato paste or a tomato puree, and this would also give you the reddest (is that a word?) sauce too!

Recipe 1: Homemade Pizza Sauce using fresh tomatoes

This recipe will give you enough sauce to cover five 10-inch pizzas.

Here’s what you need:

  • 700 gm of fresh and firm red tomatoes
  • 200 gm of tomato puree
  • 1 large chopped onion
  • 6 to 8 garlic cloves
  • 1 tbsp of oregano
  • 1 tbsp of mixed Italian seasonings
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ tsp of black pepper (or more if you like)
  • 3 tbsp of olive oil
  • Chilli flakes (optional) – to taste
How to make it:
  • Boil 1½ cups of water. Slice off the top of the tomatoes and cut them in halves. Place them in boiling water skin side down and let them blanch for about 5 minutes on high heat.
  • Use a hand blender to blend the blanched tomatoes roughly. This was the colour of the beautiful red tomatoes once I had blended them. See? That’s what I meant when I said you will not get that deep or bright red sauce at home unless you use color or store-bought pastes/ purees.

  • Now it’s time to prepare our sauce!

  • In a pan, heat olive oil, add the garlic and onion, and fry for half a minute.
  • Then add the blanched tomatoes. Cook this till the mixture thickens enough to a thick sauce consistency.
  • Add in salt and mix in oregano, mixed Italian seasoning, and ground black pepper.

  • Finally, use a hand blender to blend this cooked mixture. And this is what the sauce looks like now. Pretty good, ain’t it?

Recipe 2: Homemade Pizza Sauce using tomato paste or puree

This recipe will give you enough to cover two 10-inch pizzas.

Here’s what you need:
  • 500 gm of canned tomato paste or tomato puree
  • 1 large chopped onion
  • 6 to 8 garlic cloves
  • 1 tbsp of oregano
  • 1 tbsp of mixed Italian seasonings
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ tsp of black pepper (or more if you like)
  • 3 tbsp of olive oil
  • Chilli flakes (optional) – to taste
How to make it:
  • Heat olive oil in a pan and add the onion and garlic. Cook for a minute or two.
  • Now add in the tomato paste or puree along with the other ingredients.
  • Cook for 3 to 4 minutes and it’s done!
