Orange Marmalade

Jump to Recipe

There is just something about oranges when they are in their full season that makes them so irresistible. You almost want to try something new with them every other day. And here I am with one of their most popular cooked version: a homemade Orange Marmalade recipe!

I have used Mandarin Oranges, popularly known as Kinoo or Kinnow in India, because they are the most bright in color and are the juiciest of all. You can, however, also use seasonal or local oranges.

These Mandarin Oranges are very close to Tangerines.

Here’s what you need:
  • 6 big oranges
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2½ cups of sugar
How to make it:
  • First of all make sure to wash these oranges very well since we are going to use their rind in the recipe.
  • Next, peel the rind off the oranges and make sure to scrape out the pith i.e., the white part that lays underneath the skin of the oranges. Also make sure to throw out any orange seeds that you see.

In the Image above, what you see as strips and the whole is the rind or the peel of the oranges while the white portion is the pith of the oranges.

  • Now take the orange rinds or peels and cut them into long strips. The size of these strips depends upon how thick or thin you want them.
  • Our preparation for making orange marmalade is done. Now we are going to boil some water in a pan and add the sugar to it.
  • Let the sugar and water simmer on low heat till it is dissolved. Stir in between to ensure that the sugar does not stick to the bottom and burn.
  • Once dissolved, add the orange rinds and pieces into the water and mash them in the pot itself.
  • Cook on a medium flame till it all comes together into a thick paste like consistency. Make sure to not let it get too dry or the sugar will crystalize and the marmalade will harden.
  • Your homemade orange marmalade is ready! Make sure to store it in a sterlized container.

Note: Remember to use this marmalade in a few days since we have not added any additional preservatives to it.
