French Hot Chocolate

Jump to Recipe

The coldest weeks of the winter season are here and with fireplaces lit everywhere, I feel everyone deserves their own share of a cozy blanket and some hot chocolate. The recipe is super simple! You just need milk and the finest chocolate you can find nearby along with a few customizable ingredients and there is your delicious, decadent French Hot Chocolate ready! I have used a 70% variation, you can use something a lot more or a lot less bitter depending on what you like. Just curl up in your cozy bed or on the couch with a good movie or a novel and this steaming French Hot Chocolate.

Here’s what you need:
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 100 gm of chopped dark chocolate (70%)
  • 1 tsp of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Cinnamon sticks or bark pieces – to taste
  • A pinch of salt
  • Vanilla extract – optional
  • ¼ tsp of nutmeg powder – optional
  • 1 tsp of sugar – optional
How to make it:
  • Pour the milk into a thick bottomed pan, turn on the heat and add in the cinnamon.
  • Begin to heat this and once you get a boil, let it simmer for 6 to 7 minutes while stirring continuously. We want the cinnamon flavor to get thoroughly infused into the milk, and the milk to thicken and become creamy at the same time. You can also add in some vanilla extract or a pinch of nutmeg powder if you wish to.
  • By now the cinnamon has infused its flavour into the milk, so you need to take it out now otherwise the flavour will be very strong.
  • Add in the cocoa powder and the sugar (if you’re using it).
  • Once the milk has started to thicken, add in the chopped chocolate and salt.
  • Keep stirring until you are happy with the consistency.
  • Now you can either strain this milk into another pan and then heat it a bit more to make it more luscious and creamy or just pour it into your cup and enjoy!
  • Once you have poured it into your cup, curl up in a cozy bed with this steaming cup of goodness. No better way to celebrate winter!
