Condensed Milk

Jump to Recipe

Condensed Milk is an integral part of our everyday baking and cooking but yet so often I see people looking for its alternatives without even realizing how easy it is to make at home! If you ask me, condensed milk is nothing but our regular milk that is evaporated for most of its water content (and of course, sugar added to it!). So easy, right? The recipe just requires a bit of patience on your part but the plus point is you can be sure of what ingredients go into it while also saving a few extra bucks.

Here’s what you need:
  • 2 cups of milk
  • ⅔ to 1 cup of sugar
How to make it:
  • Pour the milk in a large saucepan. Turn on the heat and add the sugar to it right away.
  • Keep stirring till the sugar completely dissolves into the milk.
  • Once the milk has come to a boil, reduce the heat to a medium and keep stirring every few seconds. This will make sure that the milk does not start sticking to the bottom and eventually burn. It will also make sure that in the end the condensed milk is smooth.
  • As the milk cooks and reduces, you will notice that it gradually changes its colour to a beautiful, pale yellow.
  • You need to stir and cook the milk till it is reduced to less than half (that is about ¾ of a cup). At this point, your condensed milk is completely ready.
  • You can choose to stop now because as it cools, the condensed will still thicken a bit more.
