Apple Crumble

Apple crumble is one of the most classic recipes. I wouldn’t mind specifying it as a comfort dessert because the caramelized apples and the oh so crumbly layer come together in such a beautiful way that can not be easily described in words! Add a scoop of vanilla ice-cream or some warm vanilla custard and you just made bites of heaven for yourself.

I have also used here ingredients like oats and flaked almonds; even though they don’t form a part of the classic crumble.

It tastes delicious with some hot homemade custard or a scoop of vanilla icecream!


Here’s what you need:

For the filling:

  • ½ kg of apples: peeled & dried
  • 50 gm of brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp of cinnamon powder

For the crumble:

  • 4 tbsp of flour
  • 3 tbsp of oats
  • 40 gm of butter
  • 2 tbsp of sugar
  • 2 tbsp of flaked almonds – optional
How to make it:
The crumble:
  • This recipe has two parts: the crumble and the apple filling. The crumble is the easiest thing to make: so let’s get started with that. The basic idea is to make sure the butter is half the quantity of the flour. But since we are using oats and flaked almonds too, you should ideally add them to the weight of the flour and accordingly adjust the quantity of the butter.
  • To make the crumble, we are going to add the flour, oats, and the flaked almonds into a bowl or a dish followed by the butter and sugar. Mix them all together with your hands till it forms a crumble-like consistency. That’s it. The crumble part is ready!
Apple filling:
  • For the filling, we are going to dice some apples and add them to a heated pan along with 2 tbsp of water and sugar. Mix well and cover it up with a lid, letting it cook for 5 to 7 minutes till the apples are softened.
  • Once the apples are soft enough, you will realize that they have become quite mushy, and that is the type of texture we want.
  • Add in some cinnamon powder and the apple filling is ready.
  • Next, we are going to layer this dessert in a baking dish. First, add the apple filling into the dish and level it well with the help of the back of a spoon.
  • Cover it with loads of crumble and it’s ready to bake!
  • Bake at 200º C for 15 to 20 minutes or till you see that the crumble on the top is golden and well cooked.
  • The apple crumble is ready as says the golden crust on top of it. You can serve it with a generous scoop of vanilla icecream or some homemade (or store-bought) custard!
